Kempinski Hotel Berchtesgaden: A Five-Star Alpine Escape with Views Worth Cancelling Your Flight For

My family recently stayed at the Kempinski Hotel Berchtesgaden in late July, and I can confidently say: if it’s not already on your list of mountain-luxe must-visits, it absolutely should be. Perched high in the Bavarian Alps, this resort is part James Bond hideaway, part wellness retreat, and entirely unforgettable. Whether you’re traveling solo, as a couple, or with the whole family in tow — this place nails the luxury-alpine formula with confidence and grace.

Location: Just... Wow

Let’s start with what you came for: the views. They are everywhere — from our suite’s private balcony, to the dining terrace, to the pool, the lounge, and even the saunas. The surrounding mountains don’t just make a cameo — they are the main event, and they know it.

The grounds are beautifully designed and expansive, with forested walking trails, wildflowers, and a swing photo spot that practically screams “Instagram me.” Kids? They’re covered too — with an on-site playground that blends into the scenery.

And as if that weren’t enough, you can walk directly to the museum and ticket center for the Eagle’s Nest — making it one of the most convenient luxury hotels for this historic and scenic outing. Looking for something more playful? Our family’s favorite excursion was the Salzbergwerk Berchtesgaden Salt Mine (full details here) — it’s educational, underground-chic, and fun for all ages.

Shops, restaurants, and other cultural stops are just a short drive or walk away, depending on your mood. No car? No problem.

Rooms: Refined, Airy, and Designed for the View

We stayed in a Deluxe Terrace Room, while my parents had a Superior Room, and both were spotlessly clean, stylishly understated, and — hallelujah — fully air-conditioned. Every detail is thoughtfully executed, from the plush bedding to the modern lighting and spacious layout.

Now, fair warning: the shower features a peekaboo window into the bedroom. It’s modern. It’s sleek. It’s... occasionally awkward. We threw up a towel and kept it moving — not a dealbreaker, but worth a heads-up if you’re traveling with, say, your in-laws.

The star of the show? The balcony, where we spent every available minute sipping coffee, watching clouds drift over the peaks, and fully pretending we owned the place.

Dining: Elevated, Fresh, and Sometimes a Bit Too Relaxed

Breakfast was included, and honestly? It was next-level. The buffet is extensive, featuring everything from fresh pastries to smoked fish, charcuterie, local cheeses, and every egg combo your jet-lagged heart could desire. You can also order à la carte — do not miss the healthy juice shot to start your day. It’s the alpine version of a green juice cleanse, and somehow makes all the carbs feel virtuous.

We enjoyed two meals at the Lobby Lounge & Kaminbar — both healthy, flavorful, and beautifully plated. It’s casual elegance with unbeatable mountain views (and a salad that still lives rent-free in my camera roll).

Dinner at Johann Grill? Solid, but the service was slower than expected. Lovely setting, average pacing. It’s fine — just plan ahead if you’re dining with kids or hangry travel companions.

For the fine dining aficionados, PUR — the on-site 2-star MICHELIN restaurant — is open seasonally. We didn’t dine there on this trip, but it’s absolutely on our radar for next time. Reservations essential, and yes, you’ll want to dress like you’re dining with someone who owns a vineyard.

Spa & Wellness: Quiet Luxury, Alpine Edition

The spa is gorgeous — calm, earthy, and exactly what you want after a long travel day or an active morning hike. It’s nestled next to a heated indoor pool and a well-equipped fitness center, making it easy to balance indulgence with a little movement (if you're into that sort of thing).

Multiple saunas and a steam room round out the offerings, and Dana’s treatment was so good, she contemplated becoming a spa reviewer full-time. We wouldn’t stop her.

Service: The True 5-Star Flex

From the moment we arrived to the moment we (reluctantly) left, the service was exceptional. Every staff member — from front desk to concierge to housekeeping — was warm, professional, and genuinely eager to help. Special shoutout to the restaurant team who always greeted us with a smile and remembered our preferences by day two.

It’s the kind of service that anticipates what you need without hovering. Sophisticated, seamless, and effortlessly kind.

And About That Cocktail Hour...

Forget the Aperol — this is Hugo Spritz territory now. If you haven’t been introduced: elderflower, prosecco, mint, soda, and a few ice cubes of alpine magic. We sipped ours in the late afternoon sun on the terrace and fully understood why this light, floral drink is the reigning champion of summer in these parts. And yes, we ordered another.

Final Thoughts

The Kempinski Hotel Berchtesgaden is everything you want in a five-star mountain resort — luxurious but relaxed, scenic but accessible, and full of thoughtful details that elevate every part of your stay.

Whether you’re there to hike, spa, sightsee, or just stare lovingly at the Alps while nibbling a pastry, this hotel delivers. If you’re traveling with family, it’s welcoming and well-equipped. If you’re planning a romantic escape or a luxe solo getaway, the ambiance is spot-on.

And if you’re lucky enough to book a terrace suite with that view?Well, don’t say I didn’t warn you about wanting to move in permanently.
